DAY 25: Ezine – Küçükkuyu (Turkey)
Today is Republic Day in Turkey.
It is a major national holiday commemorating October 29, 1923, when the Grand National Assembly of Turkey declared the nation a republic and elected Mustafa Kemal Atatürk as its first president.
Celebrated annually, the holiday traditionally begins at 1:00 PM on the preceding day, October 28.
This year marks the 103rd anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic, with ceremonies and parades scheduled to take place across the country.
With celebrations and events planned nationwide, government offices, schools, and banks will be closed or operating on reduced hours.
DAY 25: I woke up at 4:30 AM.
There is a light drizzle in Ezine, though it doesn’t seem too cold.
Today’s destination is Küçükkuyu (I always struggle to remember the name!), located about 40 kilometers to the south.
There is a mountain pass with an elevation of around 400 meters, about 30 kilometers into the route.
The path involves a gradual ascent from the start, followed by a descent for the final 10-plus kilometers.
The coastal terrain is characterized by constant ups and downs, with very few flat stretches.
The forecast calls for cloudy skies this afternoon. Taking it easy and moving at my own pace!
I set off from Ezine at sunrise, heading toward Küçükkuyu—a distance of 46.6 kilometers.
I took my first break after 15 kilometers.
It’s drizzling, with occasional cloudy spells. The climb continues; it’s warm enough that I’m breaking a sweat on the ascent. I should reach the first town in about another 5 kilometers.
By the afternoon, the rain turned into a steady downpour. After crossing a 454-meter mountain pass, I unexpectedly encountered the Assos Tunnel (1,693 meters in total length)...
Since the tunnel is closed to pedestrians, I had to take a detour—a grueling, rugged, unpaved mountain route that proved to be quite a struggle.
The distance increased by about 3 kilometers, and the total elevation gain was significantly higher.
Exhausted, I arrived at my hotel in Küçükkuyu just after 6:00 PM, before sunset.
The hotel is situated on the shores of the Aegean Sea, offering a beautiful view of the water.
Distance traveled today: 46.6 km
Total distance from Istanbul: 590.2 km
